Climbing

How is it that my child who has not yet learned to walk can climb? This is one of the many questions having a precious son has caused me to ask lately. His favorite place to practice this newfound skill (to my chagrin) is on our coffee table! The first time he did it, he was so cute as he crawled over to it, pulled himself to standing up, then like a little gymnist raised his right leg straight out to the side in an effort to hook his little toe on the edge. When he succeeded in doing this, he then bent his leg, shifted his weight to it, and used his legs and arms to pull himself onto the top. Having accomplished this, he proceeded to pull himself to standing on top of the table, enjoy the view, turn to the front window and begin pounding on it. (We moved the coffee table to under the window to give him more room to play.) Seeing this my heart was torn – I felt great pride at his newest accomplishment of climbing and wanted to cheer him on – yeah! At the same time, I felt horror that the coffee table was his chosen place to practice it! What if the front window were to break and he were to fall out??? I am now enjoying this new skill while looking for other, safer places for him to practice climbing and continually re-directing him away from the coffee table.

Ahh...Ilana was climbing before walking too. Her item of choice was the rocking chair, which was adorable. Until she decided to stand up and try to "surf." The climbing continues, and we've had to teach her that "good girls" sit on the furniture, not stand, jump, leap, etc... Have fun!

Goodness me I remember those days. They don't last long. The good news is that he probably doesn't weigh enough to break a window - yet. The bad news is that he will hurt himself learning to ambulate sooner or later and that's just part of it. Seans favorite thing now is jumping off the coffee table! See, it gets worse! or better depending upon your point of view.
