We let him choose the meals and one activity for the day. Of everything he could choose, he chose a family water balloon fight in our backyard. We also ended up going to the zoo and checking out the newest exhibit "River's Edge." It was especially fun to see many of the animals we have recently learned or read about. For example, we recently listened to The Cat of Bubastes by GA Henty. Animals we saw from it included huge hippopotamuses, sacred ibises, and Egyptian geese. We couldn't find the mongoose in his exhibit, but the kids searched hard as bug especially enjoyed Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. After not finding it, he jokingly commented that we better be careful as there might be cobras around. We rounded the corner and there was a life-size sculpture of a king cobra! The orangoutangs (the one exhibit we saw outside "River's Edge") were quite interesting to watch, but my favorite was the sun bear playing in the waterfall to cool off. The baby elephants were pretty neat too!
I must mention that the park where the zoo is located and the zoo were incredibly busy today. After driving and not finding any free parking, we determined to try the paid lot, but it was full. Just as we were starting to come up with a Plan B, a spot opened up closer to the zoo than many of the paid spots - a real blessing which felt like God smiling down on our birthday celebration. Another little "kiss from God' was that princess had brought along the money she has been saving. After watching Bug open all his gifts in the morning, she wanted to buy a little something. The stuffed animal she had her eye on in the gift shop ended up costing exactly the amount she had brought! I just finished reading Smart Money, Smart Kids by Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel, which was an excellent book. This situation reminded me of several principles from it.
We returned home to the water balloon fight which helped cool us off, then relaxed with pizza and a movie. It was a great day!
